Classic Volks – Aircooled Volkswagen Oil Change Checklist

This checklist is designed for routine oil changes on aircooled Volkswagen engines. It covers engines with a sump plate only and those fitted with a centre drain plug.

Suitable for Beetle, Split Screen, Bay Window, Type 3 & Karmann Ghia.

Before You Start

_____ Correct engine oil selected (aircooled VW suitable)
_____ Oil strainer kit & gaskets ready
_____ Sump plate washers and/or drain plug washer available
_____ Oil drain container ready
_____ Tools to hand
_____ Engine warm (not hot)

Draining the Oil

_____ Vehicle safely supported on level ground
_____ If fitted: centre drain plug loosened and oil drained
_____ If no drain plug: sump plate nuts loosened evenly and oil drained
_____ Oil drained fully
_____ Old oil disposed of responsibly

Strainer, Sump Plate & Seals

_____ Oil strainer removed and cleaned or replaced
_____ Sump plate cleaned
_____ Old gaskets removed completely
_____ New gaskets fitted correctly
_____ Drain plug washer replaced (if fitted)
_____ Sump plate refitted evenly
_____ Nuts tightened carefully (do not overtighten)

Refilling

_____ Correct quantity of oil added
_____ Oil filler cap secure
_____ No oil spilled on exhaust or engine

Final Checks

_____ Engine started and oil pressure light goes out
_____ No leaks at sump plate or drain plug
_____ Oil level rechecked after running
_____ Tools and waste cleared
